Information Systems Department

The Department of Information Systems, Faculty of Computing, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), is committed to advancing innovation and excellence in the rapidly evolving field of information systems. Through high-quality education, cutting-edge research, and meaningful collaboration with industry, government and society, the department develops future-ready professionals, researchers and digital leaders who can address complex technological and organisational challenges.

The department places digital transformation at the centre of its academic and research agenda. We examine how organisations can strategically use information systems, data and emerging technologies to redesign processes, improve services, strengthen governance and create sustainable value. Our teaching and research address contemporary issues including artificial intelligence, data analytics, enterprise systems, digital platforms, technology adoption, cybersecurity and data governance, digital entrepreneurship, digital health and smart services.

Our academic and research activities are guided by four interconnected niche areas: Information Systems Design, Adoption and Compliance, Digital Enterprise and Commerce Innovation, Data Analytics and Organisational AI, and Digital Health and Smart Services. Together, these areas support organisations and communities in navigating digital transformation responsibly, effectively and inclusively.

The department also supports the Information and Service Systems Innovation Research Group (ISSIRG). ISSIRG advances research and innovation in information systems, digital transformation, digital services and technology-enabled organisational change. The research group promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, postgraduate supervision and industry engagement to address real-world digital challenges.

Through the Doctor of Philosophy (Information Systems) and Master in Information Technology Entrepreneurship programmes, the department provides a dynamic environment for advanced learning, research and innovation. We are dedicated to producing graduates and scholars who can lead digital transformation, create innovative technology-based solutions, and contribute meaningfully to the digital economy and society.
